Today’s topic is price matching. Specifically, price matching at the grocery store.

I’ll freely admit I really didn’t know anything about this topic until recently.  Basically, it means that if you go to a certain store (Store A), and bring along a flyer proving the price of an item from another store (Store B), they (Store A) will match the price of the discounted item from Store B.  This may make more sense with actual store names, so I’ll provide an example.  The following stores do price matching: Wal-Mart, No Frills, and FreshCo.  Here’s the steps to follow if you wanted to price match.

1. Get the flyers for the week.

2. Take a look through the flyers and see which items you need that are on sale.

3. Circle those items.

Bring along the flyers when you go to the grocery store that does price matching.  When you pick up the items, they have to be an *exact* match.  That means that the item that you are buying at say Wal-Mart, must exactly match the item advertised in the Fortinos flyer. I don’t think you can do price matching for fresh meat or vegetables at all.

When you are ready to pay for your groceries, make sure you let the cashier know before they start ringing things in that you are going to price match and provide the flyers for the items you are price matching for.  You may want to try to find a cashier who looks more senior, as they may be more familiar with this concept.  You may also want to try and find an “off” time to shop, as this can slow down the line.

Price matching is a great tool for people who don’t have the time or energy to go to more than 1 store, but still want to make sure they’re getting a great deal on their groceries!
